Genitourinary syndrome of menopause or GSM is maybe not a term you are aware of but if you are experiencing perimenopause or are post menopausal you may have some or all of its symptoms. The main symptoms are chronic urinary tract infections, urgency, frequency, lack of lubrication or dryness and irritation leading to itchiness and pain with sexual activity and decreased arousal. All of these symptoms are a result of decreased estrogen caused by ovaries that are slowing down or have stopped working as you age. Find out more about this syndrome and learn how to use the recent guidelines put out in 2025 to help you and your doctor make shared decisions about a plan of care.
